| HOW TO WIND RIBBON FROM A
HANK INTO A BALL AND AVOID TANGLES 1. Ribbon
is slippery. Always use a swift. Even if you come to a
tangle do not take the yarn off the swift. It is much
easier to take the ball off the ball winder. If you are
winding the ribbon from a swift by hand, it is even easier
to correct a tangle.
2. Ribbon likes to fall all over itself. For this reason,
never position your swift like it is a Merry Go Round.
Always position your swift like it is a Ferris Wheel.
3. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO DO: Take the label
off of the yarn and snap it out into a circle. You will
notice the ribbon has ties in 3 to 4 places. Make sure the
yarn is underneath the ties and all going in one direction
before you put it on the swift.
4. Put the yarn on the swift and adjust the circumference
to the size of the ribbon hank. Make sure you put the hank
on straight and do not twist the hank or overlap the layers
of ribbon. Cut the ties. You will notice that one of the
ties marks the beginning of the hank and one marks the end.
The others are just stabilizing ties and should be pulled
out of the hank.
5. Take one end of the hank and pull it a little. If it
pulls the top of the Ferris Wheel toward you and your ball
winder, you have the right tie. If not, try the other tie.
One of the ties should pull easily and the other will not
because it is under layers of ribbon. It helps if you
spread the ribbon out evenly on the surface of the Ferris
Wheel.
6. Keep the ribbon taunt as you wind it so that the ball
will not disintegrate as it is being made. If you find a
tangle, note that this usually only happens at the beginning
or end of a hank and is the result of over or underlapping
strands. You may need to pass the ball through a few loops
to straighten out your hank. Do not panic and do not take
the yarn from the swift. Just wind the ribbon by hand for a
few revolutions and then put it on the ball winder. You
should have not trouble. |
